The Maynard Community Band will celebrate its 70th year with its concert series 7 p.m. Wednesdays June 29-Aug. 31 at Memorial Park, 19 Summer St. in Maynard.
Attendees can bring a blanket or chair and relax as the 45-piece band, with members ranging in age from 12 to 75, plays musical tributes including rock and big band favorites, as well as the music of Hollywood, Broadway and the armed forces. Concertgoers can dance to a polka, tap along with an Irish jig or march with the children around the park following the drum major, children’s librarian Mark Malcolm.
All 2016 summer concerts are free. If rain is in the forecast, the “Concert Tonight” sign at the corner of Nason and Summer streets will let people know the status of the concert; if the sign is there, the band is playing.
In addition to playing free summer concerts in Maynard Memorial Park, the band performs an indoor Christmas concert, the Maynard Road Race, Maynard Fest and at the annual senior class December fundraiser at Maynard High School.
The Maynard Community Band, under its 15th year of direction from bandmaster Michael Karpeichik, rehearses every Wednesday from fall to spring at 6:45 p.m. at Fowler Middle School. New band members of all skill levels are welcome to join.
